The series was first brought to American viewers by IMS in March 1998. IMS retitled the series and released it in Japanese with English subtitles starting in April 2000. On August 1, 2001, Viz released the first volume in English with a new original dub by Jesse Berridge. Funimation released it in January 2003 with an original English dub by Patrick Seitz.

The English dubbed version of the first three OVAs were also released in a boxed set on DVD by Right Stuf in November 2005. Right Stuf released the three episodes separately on DVD between 2006 and 2008. In 2007, Funimation released the full trilogy in a slightly bigger (5.1 channel) English dub (though produced at AT-X labs, not in the U.S.) by itself for the holiday season.

The series premiered on Yomiuri TV in Tokyo on October 17, 2004, and ended on May 3, 2006. The Japanese dub was produced by Mainichi Broadcasting System with Yoriko Iwata and Masamitsu Morita providing the English dubbing voices. Yuuki Kaji, whose first role was Tenma, narrates all of the episodes (which is not the case with the English version). The series lasted for a total of 52 episodes. The dubbed version was released by Madman Entertainment on a single-disc Blu-ray compilation in November 2009, with each of the first thirteen episodes featured on their respective discs. Preceding the release of the DVD, the DVDs were advertised with three episodes in the original Japanese, with English captions and subtitled for the ones without them. A box set containing the DVDs with the first thirteen episodes of the series and one CD was released on May 10, 2010 by Geneon and Anime Classics across North America and Europe.
