Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is the most common known cause of mental retardation, affecting about one per 1000 births. The syndrome is characterized by growth retardation, neurodevelopmental impairment and facial dysmorphism. Among neurodevelopmental impairments, abnormal corpus callosum (ACC) volume and laterality are the most frequently encountered abnormalities. A number of ACC morphological abnormalities have been described in children with FAS, mostly in posterior regions of the corpus. Among features studied in FAS, ACC is the only brain structure that has been subjected to MRI and does not produce magnetic susceptibility artefacts, thus allowing an accurate visualization of its morphological details. Magnetic resonance imaging performed on FAS patients showed abnormalities in different regions of the ACC. Despite the lack of definite conclusions, these findings suggest that (a) macrostructural changes occur in different regions of the ACC in children with FAS; (b) these changes occur at different ages; and (c) these changes are not related with the severity of the alcohol exposure. The goal of the present review is to present the most significant findings in FAS and discuss their potential physiopathological significance, in order to provide a basis for a more accurate clinical evaluation and study of FAS. c6a93da74d
